Ribose and SAMe for more energy

SAMe again: This compound has so many amazing properties that I seem to be unable to stop writing about it. It's real name is S-adenosylmethionine, SAMe for short. The "American Journal of Medicine" published a series of articles on the use of SAMe for treating osteoarthritis. It concluded that SAMe works as well as the most popular arthritis treatments on the market. For arthritis treatment, SAMe is generally recommended at levels of 200 to l200 mg per day for approximately 21 days, until relief of symptom occurs. But SAMe is expensive: so here is the great news: SAMe is manufactured in your body from Methionine (an amino acid) Methylcobalamin (the active form of B-12, Folic acid (Folinic Acid is 3 times more useful); and B-6 (P-5-P is the more useful enzymattic form) Not only is it less expensive when you buy the ingredients and take them; but it is healthier as well. The reason is, if you do not take these supplements while you are taking SAMe, you may increase your levels of homocysteine, a poison linked to heart disease. This is why some MD's may tell their patients to take SAMe; but only for two weeks. All of the ingredients (and all are essentil for health) are found on this website.

RIBOSE: Ribose is a sugar. It's a peculiar kind of sugar. Ribose is found in all living cells and is the starting point, the starting point mind you, for what has been called "the powerhouse of the cell." This "powerhouse" is called ATP or adenosine triphosphate. Those of use who paid attention in school to our biological chemistry classes and physiological chemistry classes were fascinated by the description of the way energy is produced in the cell for all of our functions through the "explosion" of adenosine triphosphate.

Now the starting point of that most important compound has been isolated and manufactured so that everyone can feel the energy that sugar is supposed to give us. This sugar does not, I repeat, does not produe hyperglycemia.

Recent research shows that giving ribose to people suffering from myocardial ischemia, or inadequate blood flow to the heart, greatly increases energy in the heart muscle. In one placebo-contolled study of 20 men with documented severe coronary artery disease, the heart's tolerance to heavy exercise improved after three days' treatment with 60 grams of ribose daily. Ordinarily the body produces ribose from glucose slowly. Therefore it cannot produce ATP quickly. As a consequence, recovery from strenuous exercise is retarded. A study found that administration of ribose fully restored ATP levels in 12 hours vs. 72 hours without supplementaton.

ASTHMA??

Exercise induces an asthma attack in some asthmatics. A recent study assessed the effects of natural beta-carotene supplements on airway hyperactivity in a group of 38 asthmatics with exercise-induced asthma.

Lung function was measured before, during, and after an exercise session in all the study participants. The group was randomly assigned to a one-week course of placebo supplements or beta-carotene. Lung function before, during, and after exercise was measured again. Those taking the placebo for one week, as would be expeced showedf impaired lung function after the exercise session. In the beta-carotene group, however, 53% of the individuals were protected against exercise induced asthma.
