Omega-3 Fish Oil

Written By Nutriwonders

WHY DON'T ESKIMOS GET HEART DISEASE?
Many years ago when researchers began to point to animal fats and lack of fruits and vegetables in our diets as the reason for the enormous amount of cardiovascular disease in the Western world, and especially in the United States of America; We at Nutriwonders began to wonder why the Eskimos, whose diet consists of little or no vegetable matter, and mostly of animal fat, did not have a high incidence of heart disease. As well, the animal fat was from mammals such as seals and whales. Whale blubber or fat is quite a delicacy among Eskimos. Whales and seals are mammals and have the same kind of fat in their edible portions as do cows, pigs, sheep, etc. All of it is solid at room temperature. The greater part of it is harmful if it is not balanced with other things. 70% percent of the Eskimo diet is fat. Why then do Eskimos have an extremely low incidence of cardiovascular disease?

HEART FOOD
Apparently other scientists wondered the same thing and decided to do some research. They found that the low incidence of cardiovascular disease in Eskimos was due to the high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids contained in the fish and marine mammals they eat. There are several Omega-3 fatty acids. However, the two which are most important that are found in their diet are DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DMAE.

EPA discourages the formation of blood clots which are a common cause of heart attack and stroke. It also relaxes the arteries, preventing the spasms that drive up blood pressure. It also effectively lowers cholesterol, especially the most harmful types, and lowers triglyceride levels as well.

Fish oil will reduce inflammation as well. Apparently, everything from arthritis (which simply means "inflammation of the joints"), to diabetes and heart disease and autoimmune diseases. Autoimmune diseases include lupus, scleroderma, and multiple sclerosis. EPA in fish-oil has also been shown in double-blind studies (these are studies in which neither the patient nor the researcher knows what is in the capsule given) to be beneficial in rheumatoid arthritis.

BRAIN FOOD
The other part of fish-oil is DHA. It is the most important fat in your brain. When your brain cells receive inadequate amounts of DHA, they are forced to make do with inferior fats, and as a result, they are unable to function at their peak.

DHA plays a critical role in brain development in infants and children, and it affects intelligence in childhood and perhaps also later in life. Low levels of DHA are associated with an increased risk of memory loss, and according to data from the long-term Framingham Heart Study, people with low levels are more likely to develop dementia in their later years. In Japan, where the benefits of DHA are widely recognized, many foods are nutritionally fortified with DHA and DMAE, and it is reported that Japanese students supplement with DHA and DMAE before taking examinations to raise their test scores. Several years ago it was reported that the Japanese scored an overall of ll4 IQ on the Stanford-Benet Intelligence test. This was the highest score in the world for any population.

Low levels of omega-3 fatty acids have also been observed in depression and other psychological disorders. It has been estimated that 55 million people in the United States of America suffer from clinical depression. 55 million people is a large segment of the population of the United States of America. Studies suggest that some patients with these disorders cannot properly metabolize certain fats, and fish oil supplementation may improve their condiditon.
