Irritable Bowl Syndrome (ibs) And L-glutamine

Written By Nutriwonders

We at Nutriwonders have a tendency to quote often from the newsletter of Dr. Whitaker, a well-known cardiologist who uses non-drug remedies whenever they are the best remedies under the circumstances.

In his March 2002 issue he speaks of a condition which affects approximately 20 percent of the US population. It is called irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in the medical literature. Your doctor may call it “cranky bowel.” This condition, it appears from the research, may be the precursor to far more serious conditions such as ulcerative colitis or colon cancer.

The good doctor, as usual, makes excellent recommendations that have been shown in various studies to produce relief.

The obvious substances to be eliminated are alcohol, because it is poisonous, tobacco, because nicotine constricts the blood vessels in the bowel, making the digestive process very difficult, and over anxiety, because it too causes the blood vessels of the bowel to constrict, and the natural movement of the bowel to stop.

Those things that, if missing, can actually cause IBS include the amino acid L-Glutamine. An amino acid is part of a complete protein. Complete proteins are found in products that come from animals, such as milk, eggs, fish filets, chicken breast and the like. Unfortunately, research indicates that proteins that should contain all of the essential amino acids in sufficient quantities to maintain the human in good health do not necessarily contain enough L-glutamine. This fact was discovered when it was noted that the addition of L-glutamine to the diets of those persons who had had bowel surgery resulted in the faster healing of the bowel. As well the result was that the bowel absorbed nutrients much more readily with the addition of L-glutamine to the diet.

In a recent report which we mentioned a short time ago, it has been reported that the ordinary Western diet, because it lacks sufficient quantities of calcium, methionine, Omega 3 essential fatty acid, folic acid, vitamin B-12, vitamin B-6, and choline, can be the cause of the development of bowel abnormalities which are the precursors of bowel adenomas and carcinomas.

Good Health!
